Someone from outside of the board gaming community recently asked me, “Why do you think board games are fun? So, I thought I’d write about just that.
Why are board games fun? Modern board games are fun because they provide entertainment, enjoyment, a pleasant break from screens, an exciting experience, and a chance to connect with those you love.
While that’s the short and simple answer, let’s dive into what it means for something to actually be fun, as well as a few reasons that board games qualify as such.
What Makes Board Games Fun?
To answer why board games are fun, we have to first figure out what it means for something to be fun. According to Merriam Webster, the definition of fun (as an adjective) is:
providing entertainment, amusement, or enjoyment
And for further context, below are a few synonyms for the word “fun” that I found on thesaurus.com:
On the same site, I also found antonyms of fun:
Now that we have a good understanding of what it means for something to be fun (or the opposite) let’s talk about reasons why board games are fun.
5 Reasons Why Board Games Are Fun
I think I need to preface this by first saying that I realize what someone finds enjoyable, amusing, or entertaining will differ from person to person. I also realize that some classic board games can fall into the “bad” or “boring” category, therefore making them the opposite of fun.
What I’m really addressing here in this post, are reasons why someone (not everyone) might find board games fun, especially modern board games. And with that out of the way, let’s dive into the first point.
1. Board Games Are Created as a Form of Entertainment
The first reason why board games are fun is simple—they were created as a form of entertainment. If something is entertaining then by definition, it then becomes fun.
Game designers take so much care, time, and effort to create board games that are entertaining, or fun. Modern board game designers think so much about the user experience of the board games they create, ensuring that they’re fun for the players to play.
2. Board Games Provide a Pleasant Break From Screens
Another reason that board games are fun is that they provide a pleasant break from screens and technology.
Since most forms of common entertainment involve a screen of some sort, being able to do something fun and exciting away from the screen adds to the fun that board game players have.
While watching movies or playing a video game can be fun too, the memories that I create outside of and away from screens tend to be the ones that I remember enjoying the most.
3. Playing Board Games Allows You to Connect and Interact With Others
I think most of us can agree that the people in our lives and the relationships we build are one of the most important and meaningful parts of life itself.
The people you play a game with can have a huge impact on how much fun you have playing a board game. And this is one of the main reasons why board games are so much fun. You have a chance to create a shared experience and memory with the people that you love the most.
Board games also provide a way to connect with people you might just have met, and a way to get to know others as well. Board games can be a powerful force in bringing people together and in relationship building.
4. Everyone Can Find A Game They Enjoy
With all of the different types of board games, you’re bound to find a board game you will enjoy if you put in enough time and effort. There are so many options to choose from, so many different mechanics, and so many themes that impact the board game experience.
My husband and I have played hundreds of board games, and guess what? We have not loved every single game that we’ve played. And that’s OK! We sell the ones we don’t end up liking as much as we thought we would.
But, because there are so many options of board games to choose from, we have found hundreds of board games that we like and that we find fun, despite the handful of games along the way that we didn’t like.
The variety of board games and endless options makes board games fun for almost anyone.
5- The Board Game Experience Itself
The final reason I’m sharing about why board games are fun is the experience of playing the games themselves. If you’re new to board games, this might be one of the most difficult of the reasons to understand, as it’s the hardest element of board games to capture and write down in words.
There’s something so enjoyable and pleasing about the presence of a board game on a table, with the colors of the games and the beautiful design before you.
There are so many components involved in a board game, and connecting to these components with the sense of touch is enjoyable. In our house, we love dice and we love miniatures, so we play a lot of board games with dice and miniatures.
We also love using component upgrades like metal coins or plastic tokens (as opposed to cardboard), which ultimately leads to a better board game experience.
On top of that, each and every game comes with an exciting and different experience, and some kind of unique reward. The discovery and joy that comes with each game leads to a wonderful overall board game experience, and a lot of fun is had along the way.
There are so many reasons to love board games, and several reasons why board games can be fun for everyone. To recap, board games are fun because they:
- were created to be entertaining,
- provide a pleasant break from screens,
- allow you to connect and interact with others,
- and they provide you with a fun overall board game experience.
I hope you have a chance to have fun playing a board game with those you love soon. And I’d love to hear…why do you think board games are fun? Let me know in the comments!
